George Harrison 1971 Concert for Bangladesh

George Harrison and Ravi Shankar’s “Concert for Bangladesh” in 1971, had a significant impact both in terms of organizing for social action, raising funds for refugees and established a precedent, and new model for large-scale benefit concerts. The concerts, alongside the accompanying album and film generated millions of dollars for UNICEF's relief efforts for refugees struggling to survive from the Bangladesh Liberation War, a devastating cyclone, & dire famine, disease, and displacement.

These funds were used to provide essential aid such as food, medicine, clothing, and shelter. The Concert for Bangladesh not only brought the plight of the Bangladeshi refugees to the forefront of international awareness, educating a wider audience about the humanitarian crisis. As a catalyst, these initiatives sparked an awareness & focus on distant global humanitarian crises as immediate, local and direct. This new model of social awareness through entertainment helped to broaden the range of acceptable topics for discussion and public concern, moving beyond superficial Western interests and towards a greater awareness of global issues all around the world, globally as much as locally.

The Concert for Bangladesh also pioneered as a new template for future large-scale benefit concerts, inspiring events like Live Aid and Farm Aid.  The event demonstrated the power of music and celebrity to mobilize support for humanitarian causes, establishing an “altruistic” precedent for musicians to use their platform for good. Great precedents exemplify Culture, Music & Entertainment’s power & “leadership” to raise global attention to humanitarian crises and inspire deep meaningful social activism towards reflection, reparation, & resolutions.

Bob Marley & the Wailers 1980 Zimbabwe Independence Day Concert

In 1978, Bob Marley & the Wailers released the “Survival’ album with an essential message of liberation and unification of all Africa and the global struggles of Black people. After returning to Jamaica for the “One Love Peace Concert in Kingston earlier that year , Bob continued to bring people together, by performing in the Southern African country of Zimbabwe, to celebrate their reclaimed independence from Great Britain, on April 18, 1980.

Bob Marley's Zimbabwe Independence Day concert had a profound impact, going beyond entertainment by granting financial support and resources. Marley donated $2 million to the Zimbabwean government after the concert, a significant contribution to the nation's initial infrastructure and development. Marley's presence and performance at the concert was a powerful statement of unity for Zimbabwe's independence and the end of colonial downpression.  Their contributions to the new government supported and get the newly independent nation on the right start.

Bob Marley & the Wailers became emblematic of the solidarity & support, for the country's sovereignty, self-determination and independence.
His music, particularly his song "Zimbabwe," resonated with the struggles and triumphs of the nation, fostering unity and hope among the people.  Marley's impact  and legacy extends beyond just the concert, for his music and his commitment to social justice continue to inspire people worldwide. The success of Marley's event and financial contribution influenced future musicians and artists for social and political causes through Word, Sound, Power.

Freddie Mercury 1985 Live AID Concert

Freddie Mercury's performance with Queen at the 1985 Live Aid concert significantly impacted the charity event. The performance was widely praised and helped raise substantial funds, resources and awareness for famine relief in Ethiopia, demonstrating the power of music to unite and mobilize for a cause.

Live Aid, including Queen's performance, raised over $125 million for famine relief efforts in Ethiopia, making it a successful fundraising event. The concert brought international attention to the Ethiopian famine, prompting Western nations to donate surplus grain and other critical resources to address the crisis. The event also helped establish a new standard for musicians & entertainers & even educators to lead and spearhead charity benefit concerts, paving the way for more meaningful and impactful future social and humanitarian initiatives.

Live Aid set another precedent for future benefit concerts, demonstrating the potential of music to raise funds and awareness for humanitarian causes. The event inspired other charitable efforts and highlighted the role of music as a unifying force. In essence, Freddie Mercury's performance at Live Aid was a significant factor in the event's success, not just in terms of fundraising and awareness, but also catalyzed a lasting impact on the world of charity, social activism, through power-resourcing.

Especially by channeling celebrity-powered social activism and influence, “from” as well as sequentially, “into” music, film, entertainment, & popular mainstream culture of the elite & affluent, as well as the rejected and downcast of society brought cultural-social activism to a new level.

… The enduring consequences and actions resulted from
George Harrison, Bob Marley, and Freddie Mercury
contributions and inspirations towards Music, Culture,
and Social Activism have been significant and substantial.
